Charles Scribner's Sons

View a complete list of Charles Scribner's Sons titles.

Charles Scribner's Sons was founded in 1846 at the Brick Church Chapel on New York's Park Row.

Mainstays of the collection are Dictionary of American Biography, Dictionary of American History and New Dictionary of the History of Ideas. As the product line expands, including the upcoming Area Studies Program, Charles Scribner's Sons mission remains broad — to produce reference works that will serve a wide range of readers, from high school students to advanced scholars.

In 1999, Charles Scribner's Sons joined the Gale family, strengthening a long-standing academic commitment. The continuation of best practices, including peer-reviewed and original scholarship, is also expanded to include the integration of primary source documents, multi-media resources and interactive tools.

Charles Scribner's Sons has been recognized by receiving the highly coveted Dartmouth Medal in 2004 for Encyclopedia of Food and Culture, and in 2010 with a Dartmouth Medal Honorable Mention for Encyclopedia of Modern China.
